Mario Plebani, honorary professor at the University of Padua, is considered an international authority in the field of laboratory medicine, ranking first in the prestigious Highly Ranked Scholar classification, which rewards the most prolific authors regarding number of publications, whose works have a significant impact in terms of citations and are of the highest quality.

The professor is president of the “7th EFLM Conference on Preanalytical Phase, an important international conference organized by the European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) that opened today at Padova Congress.

The European Federation of Laboratory Medicine, chaired by Professor Plebani until December 31, represents over 25,000 laboratory medicine professionals from 42 national societies across Europe. At the heart of the discussion is the pre-analytical phase, i.e., the phase preceding the actual analysis, where “as some scientific studies have shown, 70% of laboratory errors are concentrated,” explains Plebani.

The 7th EFLM Conference will therefore focus on improving the pre-analytical phase through innovation, sustainable solutions and the use of artificial intelligence and robotics. The scientific program has been developed by the scientific committee to update knowledge in the field and create an open forum for interactive discussion.

In addition to presentations by international experts in the field of laboratory medicine, round tables, workshops, and poster sessions were also organized. The international scope of the event is underscored by the fact that two of the winners of the awards for best scientific contributions came from the United States, the third from France, and the award for best scientific work was given to a researcher from Turkey. The conference was created with a clear guiding principle: to stand out for its pragmatic, concrete and innovative approach. The goal is to clearly address some of the most common pre-analytical challenges, stimulate critical questions and offer insights, answers and immediately useful solutions. The topics at the heart of the program are of strategic importance for the entire sector, helping to raise operational and scientific standards. The event also represents a unique opportunity to promote discussion among professionals, share best practices and generate new perspectives for the future of the discipline.

The 7th EFLM Conference on Preanalytical Phase will be preceded by the EFLM Meeting of Science, Quality & Value of Laboratory Medicine on December 11 and will continue with the EFLM Executive Board & Division Chairs Meeting until December 14. A major event brought around 600 participants to Padua, confirming the central role played by the Padua School in laboratory medicine at an international level.

The event was organized by L.C. Congressi, under the expert guidance of Loredana Capuzzo, a company that, with its consolidated leadership and deep roots in the sector, continues to shape the most significant events in the field.

“Padua is a destination that is greatly appreciated by conference attendees,” concludes Professor Plebani, who was also President of the School of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Padua, “both for its extraordinary beauty and for the evidence of the fundamental role it has played in the history of medicine. Just think, for example, of how exciting it is for those involved in laboratory medicine to be able to visit a unique place like the Bo’s Anatomical Theater.”
